Heavy Metal

Featuring steam operations in 26 countries, Heavy Metal is the life's work of 3 Australian enthusiasts, George Bambery, Malcolm Holdsworth & Robert Kingsford-Smith. The book contains evocative scenes of steam locomotives at work & at rest on the railways of the world since the late 60s.

Starting with their early efforts in Australia, Heavy Metal takes the reader on a chronological tour of each photographer’s favourite images, featuring not only the biggest but also the more unusual locomotives operating in steam’s declining years. Whilst free flowing personal introductions put steam photography in context, the photographic emphasis is very much on the use of light & colour, particularly the saturated tones of sunrise & sunset. Aimed squarely at the enthusiast, Heavy Metal is a gallery of images which would impress the general photographer as well.
